New Zealand occupies one of the most unique regions on planet Earth. Sharing a distant corner of the world with Australia, where the Indian and Pacific Oceans meet, the waters around New Zealand are brimming with wildlife that draws visitors from around the globe. The New Zealand Mint commemorates one of the region’s well-known inhabitants on the 2015 1 oz New Zealand Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle coin. The coins in this series are a continuation of the older Taku coin series from the New Zealand Mint, with each coin containing .999 fine silver.
The New Zealand Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle coin carries on the tradition of the Taku coin. The hawksbill turtle is found in tropical waters throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The species is named for its narrow beak and is recognizable by the colorful, overlapping scales that adorn its shell. Each year, the hawksbill turtle migrates from feeding grounds around Fiji to the majestic beaches of New Zealand for its breeding season.
Locally, the hawksbill turtle is known as the Taku. It is this name that was used on the original coin series. Each coin in the 2015 1 oz New Zealand Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle series features this beautiful sea creature swimming through the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. On the other side is the famous portrait image of Queen Elizabeth II.
The New Zealand Mint produces the Silver Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins from its facility in Auckland. The privately owned mint is the only mint in New Zealand and is responsible for producing collector and bullion coins for nations throughout the South Pacific, such as Fiji, the Cook Islands, Niue, and Tuvalu. This responsibility has led the company to adopt the motto, “Minters of the South Pacific.”
