Mexico’s War of Independence with Spain started in 1810 and lasted for more than a decade. The long battle was the culmination of immense social and political upheaval, resulting in imagery that lives on today in the hearts and minds of Mexicans. Now those images grace the obverse side of the 2015 5 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin, available from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
As the nation of Mexico ramped up celebration of the centennial of its independence in the 1920s, the statue of Winged Victory rose over the horizon in the center of Mexico City. A symbol of the nation’s resistance during the war, the statue was a reminder of the nation’s hard-earned freedom.
The obverse side of the coin bears the striking, imposing image of Winged Victory in the center. Around the outside are engravings of the coin’s weight, metal content, purity, and face value. In the background, twin volcanic peaks that played a pivotal role in ancient Aztec cultural lore are visible. The “OM” mint mark of the Mexican Mint is also visible on this side.
On the reverse side of the coin, the Mexican coat of arms is featured in the middle. The phrase “Estados Unidos Mexicanos” graces the top of the coat of arms. Surrounding the modern coat of arms are 10 different versions used by the nation throughout its history.
The coins in this product listing are all available in perfect Mint State 70 condition. Each coin has its full, original luster, and there are no blemishes, contact marks, or detracting flaws of any kind visible on its surface.
Mexican Silver Libertad coins are struck by the Mexican Mint with the permission of Banco de Mexico. The institution is the oldest operating facility in the Western Hemisphere, having been founded in 1535 by the conquering Spanish.
