The Kisatchie coin in the series represents the Kisatchie National Forest located in the state of Louisiana. The forest covers 604,000 acres of land across seven parishes in the northern and central regions of Louisiana. The area is noted for its large longleaf pine forests and the presence some of the oldest rocks in the state, dating back to the Cenozoic period.
America the Beautiful is a 56-coin series dedicated to important moments, monuments, parks, and forests across the country. Each year, the United States Mint releases five new coin designs representing another state or territory. Planned to run through 2021, the program will eventually represent all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five territories of the nation.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image of a local water fowl taking flight from the low grasslands. On the left side of the image, some of the regions tall longleaf pines stretch toward the sky.
The obverse side bears the standard left-profile portrait of President George Washington found on American quarters. Refined in 1932 by John Flanagan, the profile of Washington is based upon a 1786 bust sculpted by William Cousins.
Each of the coins available for purchase in this product listing is a bullion coin with the deeply-mirrored finish commonly found on proof products. These coins have an MS69 grade, indicating that the full, original luster remains, and no more than two detracting flaws are visible.
