The first coin released in the 2015 production year of the America the Beautiful series represented the state of Nebraska. President Lincoln approved The Homestead Act in 1862, encouraging westward expansion of American citizens. The symbols of life on the prairie are featured on the 2015 5 oz ATB Homestead Silver coin, available now courtesy of JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
America’s Homestead Act encouraged citizens to move westward and settle the lands west of the Mississippi River. In exchange for as much as 160 acres of land, Americans had to agree to live on their parcel of land for five years, cultivate the land, and improve the landscape for future use. The move helped spur growth as the country expanded beyond its original colonial borders.
The America the Beautiful coin series was introduced in 2010. It features five new coins each year, with designs that honor a monument, moment, or place from regions across the country. The plan is to release 56 coins in total, representing the 50 US states, the five territories, and the District of Columbia.
On the reverse side of the coin is the image of a homesteader’s cabin, with a simple water pump out front of the property. Two wheat stalks surround the image. These symbols are indicative of the needs of those early settlers: food, water, and shelter. The obverse side uses the same imagery found on American quarters, with the primary image that of President George Washington.
Each of the coins in this product listing has a near-perfect grade. While the coins still have their full, original luster, you may see as many as two blemishes, detracting flaws, or contact marks. The deeply-mirrored, proof-like finish of these coins creates stunning attractiveness for each product.
