When most people think of ancient mythology and gods of the world, they think first of Rome and Greece. However, the Norse gods were as deeply intertwined in the culture and lore of Scandinavian people as their Roman and Greek counterparts. Germany’s BH Mayer Mint proudly celebrates the gods of Norse culture in a new 9-coin series. Right now, the 2015 2 oz Cook Islands Silver Norse God Thor Coin is available from JM Bullion.

In Norse mythology, Thor was the son of Odin, King of the Gods. Thor’s place was by his father’s side, and he was associated with thunder, lightning, storms, and strength. The source of his power was his magical hammer, which could not be lifted by any god or human by himself.
Each of these coins features a unique ultra-high-relief proof striking. In order to achieve this visual appearance, blanks are struck multiple times under much higher pressure than standard bullion and proof coins. The antique finish on this coin gives it the soft appearance of age, even though it was issued in 2015.
On the reverse side of the silver coin is the image of Thor, with the engravings “Norse Gods” and “Thor” accompanying the primary design. The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II’s image, along with engravings that bear her name, the nation of issue, year of issue, and the face value of the coin.
These 2015 2 oz Cook Islands Silver Norse God Thor coins are the second release in a planned 9-coin series. Each one will celebrate a different Norse god, and the coins were launched in 2015 with the release of the Odin coin.
Germany’s BH Mayer Mint is a privately-owned minting facility that has five-generations of history and experience in producing gold and silver coins, rounds, and bars. Founded in 1871, the mint remains in business today and launched the Norse God Series in 2015 with the Odin coin.
