The Cook Islands Temple of Heaven Coin is a truly unique piece of numismatic artwork because it features a 3D, concave appearance that one would see only if they were standing inside the Temple of Heaven. Looking at the reverse side of the coin is reminiscent of looking up into the ceiling of the temple itself.
On the obverse side of the coin is the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her image is surrounded by the engravings “Elizabeth II,” “Cook Islands,” and the face value of the coin (20 Dollars), as well as the initials of the artist behind the Queen’s portrait; Ian Rank-Broadley (IRB).
The reverse features the stunning depiction of the Temple of Heaven’s interior ceiling. The interior support pillars and spiraling construction of the roof are visible in brilliant, 3D rendering on the coin. A small engraving along the top of the coin reads simply “Temple of Heaven.”
The Temple of Heaven is located in the southeastern district of central Beijing. Translated in both simplified and traditional Chinese as “altar of heaven,” the Temple has stood in Beijing since 1368. The building is part of a larger complex of religious buildings that were used by the Ming and Qing dynasties as central gathering places for annual prayer ceremonies. Although used as an imperial sacrificial altar, the most common activities included ceremonies that featured prayers for a good harvest.
