Coins in the Star Trek series from the Perth Mint have been released in order of the characters appearance in the various television series that appeared starting in 1966. However, each of the first three sets honored captains and starships, beginning with Star Trek: The Original Series and Captain James T. Kirk. Later editions featured Captain Picard from The Next Generation, and even more recently, Captain Sisko from Deep Space Nine.
This coin jumps back to The Original Series to cover other major characters from the franchise. Known to many as simply Mr. Spock, Leonard Nimoy’s character was a science officer and first officer to Captain Kirk aboard the Enterprise.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz Star Trek Spock Proof Silver Coin is the brilliant, colorized image of Leonard Nimoy in his role as Spock. The common Star Trek motif used on the background of all coins is featured on the reverse, as well as the coin’s purity and weight.
The obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. Her likeness is used on all commemorative coins with legal-tender status struck at the Perth Mint. The image is surrounded by an engraving of her name, above, and the coin’s face value, year of minting, and “Tuvalu” below.
The Perth Mint produces legal-tender coins for many of the small island nations in the South Pacific, including the coral atoll of Tuvalu. Located in Perth, Australia, it is a state-owned facility under the guidance of the state of Western Australia.
