The Perth Mint took its own slice of the Star Trek craze when it introduced a new series of coins commemorating the science fiction cult classic. Now, the designers at the Perth Mint are back with a brand new two-coin set honoring The Next Generation series. The 2015 1 oz Star Trek Proof Silver Two-Coin set is now available for purchase from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Following the success of the Captain James T. Kirk coin and the Star Trek Original Series U.S.S. Enterprise coin, the Perth Mint unveiled a second set of coins for the Star Trek series. Developed by Gene Roddenberry in 1966, Star Trek: The Next Generation debuted on television in 1987. The series ran for a total of seven seasons, and featured actor Sir Patrick Stewart in the key role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
Stewart’s rendition of Captain Picard is featured on one of the coins in this set, while the Next Generation version of the U.S.S. Enterprise is featured on the other coin. On the reverse side of the Captain Picard coin is the color version of Stewart in full uniform. The reverse side of the Enterprise coin features the intergalactic spacecraft in silver, but deep blacks and brilliant blues highlight the galaxy behind the Starfleet craft.
The obverse side of both coins features the iconic right-profile portrait of England’s Queen Elizabeth II. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, Her Majesty’s image is featured on the obverse of all legal tender coins struck by the Perth Mint.
Located in the state of Western Australia, the Perth Mint is a state-owned entity that is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint. However, the Perth Mint does hold the distinction as the oldest operating mint in Australia as the lone holdover from the Royal Mint of London system during British rule.
