Star Trek first appeared on American television sets in 1966 and ran for a total of three seasons on NBC. Since that time, the show has developed a cult following that powered the popularity of spin-offs such as games, figurines, toys, comic books, and even new feature films. This coin features the image of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, as played by actor Sir Patrick Stewart on The Next Generation.
On the reverse side of these proof coins is the image of Patrick Stewart in his iconic role of Jean-Luc Picard. Stewart’s image is featured in brilliant, colored relief. The outline of his ship, the U.S.S. Enterprise, is featured in the background, and the design is accompanied by the engravings of “Captain Jean-Luc Picard,” the trademark for the show, and a small “P” mint mark.
The obverse side of the coin features the standard imagery featured on the opposite side of all Perth Mint coins. Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse. Her Majesty’s image is surrounded by the engravings “Queen Elizabeth II,” “1 Dollar Tuvalu,” and “2015.”
Tuvalu is a Polynesian island nation in the Pacific Ocean that is located midway between Australia and the US state of Hawaii. The Perth Mint in Australia is responsible for producing legal tender coins for the small island nation.
Australia’s Perth Mint is the lone holdover from the days of the Royal Mint system established during British rule. It is not the national mint of Australia, an honor that belongs to the Royal Australian Mint, but it is a state-owned entity of the government of Western Australia.
