Gene Roddenberry created the original Star Trek concept in 1966, with the original series airing on NBC for three seasons in the United States. He would go on to play a hand in the development of numerous feature films, an animated series, and two spinoffs of the popular original series.
Star Trek: Voyager debuted on television in the US on January 16, 1995, and was the first television series developed without any input or approval from Roddenberry, who had passed away several years earlier. Actress Kate Mulgrew played the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway, and became the first female commanding officer in the series’ history.
On the reverse side of the 2015 1 oz Star Trek Captain Janeway Proof Silver Coin is the colorized image of Kate Mulgrew as Captain Janeway. The background design features an overhead shot of her ship, the USS Voyager, along with her name, the coin’s weight, purity, and metal content, and the Perth Mint’s “P” mint mark.
The obverse side features the common image of Queen Elizabeth II developed by Ian Rank-Broadley. The Queen’s right-profile portrait has featured on countless coins across the former British Empire, and Ian Rank-Broadley’s is the current iteration in use on Perth Mint coins, having been created in 1988. The Queen’s name, face value of the coin, nation of issue, and year of minting are all engraved on this side.
