The people of the Crow Nation historically called the Ohio Valley region home. However, they were forced out of the area by the Iron Confederacy of the Ojibwe and Cree peoples who had already procured firearms through trading with European powers.
Over the course of a century, the Crow people were forced to an area just south of Lake Winnipeg, Canada, forced from that home by the Cheyenne, and then pushed out of the Dakotas by the Lakota (Sioux) tribes. Today, the Crow reservation is located in the state of Montana and there are 12,000 enrolled members in the tribe.
The obverse of each of these silver proof coins features the image of two Crow warriors riding together on horseback. The coin features engravings that read “Crow” and “999 Silver 2015 One Dollar One Ounce.”
On the reverse is the image of a timber wolf lying prone on the ground, with its head raised to the sky as it bellows out an eerie howl. Engravings on this face include “Montana Timber Wolf” and the word “America.”
Each of these 2015 1 oz Proof Montana Crow Timber Wolf Silver Coins features a satin finish, giving it a mirror-like appearance. Although these coins have face values from the Native American Mint, only the United States Mint can issue a legal tender face value to American coins.
