The Treasures of the World series from the Perth Mint was first introduced in 2013. Each gold and silver proof coin in the series honors a different region, its natural wonders, and resources, such as vital minerals that are commonly used by mankind.
In the 2015 1 oz Treasures of the World coin representing North America, turquoise is the featured honoree. Turquoise is a gemstone that has been prized by human civilization for centuries. Though it is found throughout the world, America’s southwestern states of California, Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah have some of the world’s largest deposits.
On the reverse side of this gold proof coin is the depiction of a southwestern landscape, complete with a cactus, tumbleweed, and a sheer rock face stretching to the horizon. In the center, a transparent locket containing turquoise is included in the design. “Treasures of the World,” “Turquoise,” and the “P” mint mark are engraved on this side.
Given the transparent nature of the turquoise locket, it dominates the center of the obverse side of the coin. Queen Elizabeth II’s right-profile portrait is featured directly above the locket, with her name, the nation of issue, and the coin’s weight, purity, metal content, year of minting, and face value featured around the design sets.
The Perth Mint is one of the world’s foremost producers of gold and silver precious metal products. Originally founded in 1899, today it is a state-owned entity of Western Australia and exists outside the Royal Australian Mint system.
