The Hawksbill Turtle coin series is the continuation of the original Fiji Silver Taku coins, first introduced by the New Zealand Mint in 2010. The coins quickly became some of the most popular New Zealand Silver Coins. The coins were originally struck featuring the hawksbill turtle, known as the taku in Fiji, for the autonomous region of New Zealand. However, Fiji’s status with New Zealand has changed since that time, and as of 2014 the coins are minted for Niue as the Niue Hawksbill Turtle.
Each 2015 1 oz New Zealand Silver $2 Niue Hawksbill Turtle coin in this JM Bullion listing has a perfect grade of MS70 from the NGC. Coins in this condition still feature their full, original mint luster, and bear no detracting flaws of any kind.
The image on the reverse of each Niue Hawksbill Turtle is the same used on the original Fiji Taku, that of the hawksbill turtle as it swims through the water. There are still contrasting sections of matte and deeply-mirrored finish, with engravings that feature the weight, metal content, and purity of the coin, as well as the word “Turtle.”
On the obverse you’ll find the latest image of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. For the Niue Hawksbill Turtle coins, the New Zealand Mint has selected Ian Rank-Broadley’s 1998 depiction of the Queen, and engravings include her name, the nation of issue, the coin’s face value, and its year of issue.
