The Hawksbill Turtle, or Fiji Taku, coin is one of the most unique silver bullion programs around at the moment. Although it is struck with a common reverse design each year, it is issued to two separate island nations in the South Pacific.
There are subtle differences between the design of the coins on the reverse. Fiji Taku coins bear the name Taku, rather than hawksbill, because the local Fijian populace uses Taku to refer to the animals. Additionally, the reverse features the phrase “Fiji Taku” rather than “Turtle.” The obverse sides are completely different, with the Fiji Taku Silver coins bearing the coat of arms of Fiji since 2013.
Each of the 2015 1 oz New Zealand Silver $2 Fiji Taku coins available to you today is in Mint State 69 condition. According to the NGC, specimens such as this feature their full, original mint luster and no more than two minor detracting flaws.
On the reverse is the image of the Taku turtle, complete with contrast matte finishes and deeply-mirrored finishes for a unique appearance. On the obverse is the Fijian coat of arms, along with engravings of the nation of issue, year of issue, and face value.
The New Zealand Mint is a privately-owned facility in Auckland, and is not associated with the national government. Official New Zealand dollars and coinage are produced overseas by the Royal Canadian Mint and Royal Mint of London.
