The Mexican Silver Libertad’s designs were originally introduced on Mexican currency in 1920. As the nation celebrated the centennial of the beginning of its War of Independence with Spain, a statue of Winged Victory was erected in central Mexico City. Her image, a symbol of inspiration during the war, was then featured on Mexican currency of the day.
Today, the obverse side of the 2015 1 oz. Mexican Silver Libertad coin bears the image of Winged Victory. In the background, Mexico’s noted Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl volcanoes are visible. The volcanoes hold a special place in ancient Aztec lore. Engravings on this side include the weight, purity, metal content, year of minting, and the face value of the coin. The “OM” mint mark identifies the coin as a product of the Mexican Mint.
On the reverse is the image of the Mexican coat of arms. The modern coat of arms is featured in the middle, with historical versions encircling it. Surrounding the central coat of arms is the official name of the nation, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”
