The Birds of Prey Series from the Royal Canadian Mint was a four-coin set that featured unique reverse designs representing various species of predatory birds found in Canada. The coins were released in 2014 and 2015, with two coins each year spaced out by six months. The bald eagle and peregrine falcon coins were released in 2014, and the Great Horned Owl was the fourth and final coin released, following the 2015 Red Tailed Hawk coin.
Each of the 2015 1 oz Canadian Silver Great Horned Owl coins available today has an MS68 grade from the NGC. Coins in this condition still have their full, original mint luster, but have three or four minor detracting flaws. These flaws are limited to miniscule contact marks, and all are located outside the primary focal areas of the coin’s design.
On the reverse you’ll find the image of a Great Horned Owl, with its wings outstretched, as it swoops down on its prey. Engravings read “Canada, “9999,” and “Fine Silver 1 oz. Argent Pur.” The obverse bears the image of Queen Elizabeth II featured in right-profile relief, and surrounded by engravings that include her name and the face value of the coin.
The Royal Canadian Mint was originally founded in 1908 to process the precious metals discovered in the Yukon Territories in the late 19th century. Today it is among the finest producers of precious metal products in the world.
