Australian Map Shaped Coin Series products are among the most unique from the Perth Mint. At first glance, you’ll notice this is no average coin. Rather than the traditional round shape, these bullion coins mimic the exact outline of the continent of Australia.
These coins were released for the first time in 2012 with a Kookaburra coin. Each year, the Perth Mint releases two new designs. The program started with the Kookaburra and Emu in 2012, the Kangaroo and Platypus in 2013, and the Koala and Saltwater Crocodile in 2014. A Wedge-tailed Eagle coin has already been released in 2015.
On the reverse face of the coin is a colorized design swath that includes an image of the redback spider. The background fields above and below the design set feature a frosted finish, with “Redback Spider” and the weight, purity, and metal content engraved above, the year of issue below, and the “P” mint mark to the bottom left.
The obverse side of the coin features a frosted finish, with Queen Elizabeth II’s profile portrait in the center of the continent map shape. Her Majesty’s image is immediately surrounded by engravings that read “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” “and the face value of the coin, along with the year of issue.
Perth Mint is a state-owned entity of the government in Western Australia. Not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint, its products do enjoy legal tender status under the Currency Act of 1965.
