Featuring the same design concept each year, with a different specific motif, the Australian Koala is highly regarded by numismatists. Australian Silver Koala coins were first introduced in 2007, some 17 years of the Australian Silver Kookaburra coin program that launched the popularity of Perth Mint wildlife-themed bullion coins. Australian Koala coins feature a new design each year on the reverse, though the motif remains the same each year.
The 2015 1 oz Australian Silver Koala coin available to you in this product listing is in near-perfect condition from the NGC. Coins with an MS69 grade feature full, original mint luster, with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws.
On the reverse you’ll find the latest Australian Koala design from the Perth Mint. An adult koala is featured in the bend of a broken eucalyptus tree trunk, with its blank, black eyes fixed on a distant object. The rolling grasslands in the background lead to a rocky outcrop of the Australian Outback.
The obverse features the familiar image of Queen Elizabeth II used on Commonwealth coins since it was created in 1998. Designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, Her Majesty’s effigy on this coin represents the fourth depiction of the Queen during her six decade reign as England’s monarch.
Perth Mint was founded in 1898 as the third and final facility in London’s Royal Mint system on the continent. The facility is now owned and operated by the government of Western Australia, and though not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint, its coins enjoy legal-tender status under the Currency Act of 1965.
