Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, raised in Kowloon, China, and returned to the United States to alter the face of martial arts films forever. Prior to his return to the United States at the age of 18, the portrayal of Asians and martial arts in Hollywood films was subpar. As a martial arts instructor and child actor, Lee helped change all of that.
In addition to bringing authenticity and creativity to martial arts films produced in Hollywood, Lee also infused his films with themes of Chinese nationalism that helped popularize Hollywood films overseas in various Asian markets. More than just an actor and instructor, Lee was also respected as a philosopher and for his talents behind the camera as a filmmaker.
On the reverse side of each 2015 ¼ oz 75th Anniversary of Bruce Lee Proof Gold Coin is the image of Lee as he performs an aerial martial arts maneuver. As he was in so many action films, Lee is portrayed with his shirt off, displaying the impressive physique that was a hallmark of his healthy living.
The obverse side of the coin features the right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II. Commonly featured on coins produced in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand, this portrait was created by Ian Rank-Broadley, and includes a small “IRB” inscription below the Queen’s neck in honor of the artist.
