The official gold bullion coin of Mexico is the Libertad. Inspired by the historic Centenario coin and bearing design motifs similar to it, the Mexican Gold Libertad is struck by the Mexican Mint on an annual basis. Now one of North America’s most popular coins, the 2015 ½ oz Mexican Gold Libertad Coin is available through JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
- Mintage often capped below 5,000 on an annual basis.
- Contains ½ oz of .999 pure gold.
- Features designs from the Centenario.
Mexican Gold Libertad coins have not enjoyed the same regularity in production as its silver bullion counterpart. The bullion Gold Libertad was actually struck first by the Mexican Mint, with a ¼ oz, ½ oz, and 1 oz coin struck in 1981, but production halted for a decade after that year.
In 1991, the Mexican Mint reintroduced the bullion Gold Libertad in 1991 with five weights, but production only occurred for four years before another hiatus in striking. After a one-year production in 2000 and one-year hiatus in 2001, the Mexican Gold Libertad coin returned for good in 2002.
These 2015 ½ oz Mexican Gold Libertad coins feature the likeness of Winged Victory in the center, with the twin volcanic mountains of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl rising up toward the sky in the background. The volcanic peaks are named after a pair of Aztec lovers whose tragic tale is similar to that of Romeo and Juliet.
On the reverse, the Mexican coat of arms is featured in the middle. Around the official seal of the nation, you’ll see the engravings of a wreath and the full name of Mexico, “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”
The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors looking to refine and export the precious metals located throughout Central America. Today, it is one of the oldest operating facilities in the world, predating by more than 250 years the United States Mint and the Royal Canadian Mint by almost 500 years.
