Mexican Silver Libertad coins are struck in seven weights each year. There are three full-weight coins (5 oz, 2 oz, and 1 oz) and four fractional-weight coins ranging from ½ oz to 1/20 oz. These 1/10 oz coins are traditionally among the more popular in the series. Every coin features .999 pure silver and is struck in limited mintage by the Mexican Mint.
Images used on the Mexican Silver Libertad coins dates to 1920 when the nation marked 100 years since the start of its War of Independence. A statue of the Angel of Independence was built in the center of Mexico City to honor the nation’s struggle to free itself from Spanish oppression. The image of the winged angel first appeared on the Centenario, and has been used on the Silver Libertad for over 30 years now.
On the obverse side of the coin is the image of the Angel of Independence. Standing atop a pillar, she is featured in full-length in the foreground, while the peaks of the Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl rise toward the heavens in the background. The reverse side of the coin features the national coat of arms of Mexico. In the image, a bald eagle is perched atop a cactus as it struggles with a serpent in its beak. It is surrounded by the engraving of a wreath and the phrase “Estados Unidos Mexicanos.”
The Mexican Mint was founded in 1535 by Spanish conquistadors looking to refine the precious metals of Central America before shipping the wealth back to Spain. Today, it is the oldest operating mint in the Americas.
