The first Australian Koala coins were introduced by the Perth Mint in 2007. In just eight years of production, the coin has become one of the most popular around the world, and is one of the few coins under .9999 silver fineness deemed eligible for use in a Precious Metal IRA.
One of the factors that makes the Australian Koala extremely popular is the changing design of the sovereign coin. While coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf and American Eagle feature the same obverse and reverse designs each year, the Australian Koala has a new reverse design each year. The motif is always the same, but the specific depiction of the koala changes each year.
On the obverse of these Australian Koalas is the iconic image of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. Her Majesty’s right-profile portrait is surrounded by engravings that include her name, the nation of issue, and the face value of the coin.
The reverse side of the 2015 1/10 oz Australian Koala Silver Coin bears the new image of the continent’s beloved marsupial. In the depiction, a single adult koala is shown sitting in the break of a eucalyptus tree. The tall grasslands in the background eventually give way to the rolling hills of the Australian Outback in the distant background.
Australia’s Perth Mint was opened in 1899 as the third and final facility in the British Royal Mint system. Today, it is owned by the state government of Western Australia, and although it is not affiliated with the Royal Australian Mint, national law establishes its coins as legal tender.
