Burnished Silver Eagle coins were issued first in 2006 by the US Mint as part of the 20th-anniversary celebration of the collection. The coins have remained on as an annual issue in the Silver Eagle series but were halted for two years in 2009 and 2010 as the height of the recession and rising demand for silver stretched the US Mint’s supply of silver blanks to the limit.

On the obverse of 2014 Burnished American Silver Eagle coins is the image of Walking Liberty. Created in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty design depicts Liberty as she walks toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped over her shoulders. This image originally appeared on the nation’s 50-cent circulation coin from 1916 to 1947.

The reverse of the Burnished American Silver Eagle coin has the heraldic eagle of the United States. This design has been modified and modernized numerous times since it first appeared in 1794. In this depiction, John Mercanti has modernized the US heraldic shield in front of a bolder American eagle clutching the arrows of war and the olive branch of peace.
