Florence Mabel Kling was born on August 15, 1860, in Marion, Ohio, to a wealthy family. She was well-educated and attended Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Florence married Henry Atherton DeWolfe, a wealthy businessman, in 1880. They had a son, Marshall Eugene DeWolfe, who sadly died of illness as an infant in 1882.
