Proof American Gold Eagles were initially offered in just a 1 oz weight. In 1986 and 1987, the first two years of production, the 1 oz was the only coin struck in proof, even though the bullion version had four weights. In 1988, the three fractional-weight coins were introduced; the ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz.
Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ image of Lady Liberty was selected for use on the obverse side of American Gold Eagle coins. Liberty is featured in her traditional robes, with a torch held aloft in her right hand, and an olive branch in her left. Saint-Gaudens’ image was first used on the $20 Gold Double Eagle in 1907.
The reverse features the image of a family of nesting bald eagles, which was created specifically for this coin series. Miley Busiek, a sculptor by trade, was chosen to create the image for the American Gold Eagle’s reverse.
Each of the coins in this JM Bullion product listing is available with a PF70 grade from the NGC. Perfect coins have their full, original luster and no blemishes. Ultra-cameo coins are defined by strong, frosted design sets overlaying deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
