Baseball may seem like a mild sport by some, but its 162-game schedule is a grueling endeavor that covers six months of the year. One man laid claim to the title of baseball’s Iron Man with his unmatched ability to show up for every game, play through injury and pain, and succeed. Cal Ripken is one of Major League Baseball’s most respected players of all time, and he is honored with a special signature label on this 2014 $1 Baseball Hall of Fame Silver Coin from the US Mint.
Coin Highlights:
Cal Ripken played third base and shortstop for 21 seasons for the Baltimore Orioles. During his two decades in baseball, he earned the title Iron Man for appearing in 2,632 consecutive games. His reliability helped him break Lou Gehrig’s record for consecutive games played. That record had stood for 56 years prior to Ripken’s accomplishment, and was widely considered unbreakable.
These 2014 $1 Baseball Hall of Fame Silver Coins have a PR70 grade from the Professional Coin Grading Service, indicating a perfectly struck proof. The DCAM, or deep cameo, designation is reserved for coins with a strong, frosted design that overlays a deeply mirrored, clear background. The “P” mint mark identifies the coin as a product of the Philadelphia Mint. The Cal Ripken label included in the plastic packaging includes his player photo, name, and a reproduction of his signature.
On the obverse side of each coin is the open palm of a baseball glove. The reverse side bears the 3D image of a baseball. These coins are the first curved designs ever released by the United States Mint. Cassie McFarland won an open contest among designers and artists in 2013 for use on the Baseball Hall of Fame coin series.
