Design images used on these modern Libertad coins date back to the gold Centenario issued by the Mexican Mint in the 1920s. These designs were created in honor of the nation’s centennial celebration of the start of its War of Independence with Spain.
The Mexican Silver Libertad coin program started with just a 1 oz coin available in 1982, but expanded to include other weights over time. The bullion series added fractional-weight coins in 1991 with the introduction of 1/20 oz, 1/10 oz, ¼ oz, and ½ oz coins. An additional expansion took place in 1996 with the introduction of 2 oz and 5 oz weights.
On the obverse side of each of these coins is the statue of Winged Victory, erected in Mexico City’s central square in 1920 to honor the nation’s War of Independence. In the background, the volcanic peaks of Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl are visible.
The reverse side of all coins features the modern coat of arms for the nation of Mexico in the center. Featuring a bald eagle battling a serpent as it is perched atop a cactus, the image is surrounded by 10 historic versions of the coat of arms used by the nation since its independence was won.
Each coin available in this product listing has a perfect grade from the NGC. Coins with an MS70 grade have their full, original luster, and no detracting flaws, contact marks, blemishes, or hairlines.
