According to the Chinese Lunar calendar, 2014 represents the year of the horse and to commemorate such a significant year, the Royal Canadian Mint released a special edition horse privy to appear on each of its 2014 Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coins. As with other commemorative pieces, these horse privy coins received a brief mintage limited to only 85,000 coins. Each one was produced from 1 troy ounce of 99.99% pure silver.
Equally as distinguishing as their design is the exceptional condition of these particular horse privy coins. Each coin in this series possesses a (RP) Reverse Proof, PF69 (Proof 69) grade by the NGC (Numismatic Gauranty Corporation). The term “reverse proof” means that the primary focal points of the coin possess a mirror like quality, while the backdrop and secondary images have a frosted appearance. The PF69 grade indicates that the coin is near perfect condition without any hairline marks or contact marks to mar the proof finish of the main design elements. There may, however, be up to two contact marks on the secondary frosted areas. To protect their graded condition, each of these coins has remained sealed in its separate NGC certified slab.
With the exception of the new privy mark, the coin has maintained its original design. Prominently displayed on the front artwork is the iconic maple leaf with its fully rendered details such as its pointed lobes and its netted veins. The horse privy mark is featured to the bottom left of the maple leaf. The design for the privy features the silhouette of a horse that has reared up on its hind legs. Also inscribed on the front are the words “Canada” and the coin’s vital information. On the reverse side of the coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, whose portrait reminds viewers of the Canadians’ continued allegiance to both Britain and the benevolent monarch. Her name and the coin’s mintage year encircle the effigy.
