Limited mintage of only 2,500 coins worldwide!
This past year, the Royal Canadian Mint released the 2014 5 oz. Canadian Silver Maple Leaf Coin. It is one of the few 2,500 coins ever created during its limited release. The coin features a new version of the traditional maple leaf design along with a heavier weight of 5 troy ounces. It is, however, still minted from the same high quality .9999 fine silver as the previous maple leaf coins, giving it a circulating face value of $50 CAD. Each of the maple leaf coins seen here has remained in brand new, uncirculated proof condition and comes encased in its original mint box for protection.
The $50 maple leaf coin features several revisions to its original design. Instead of featuring a single leaf, the front of the coin now features a trio of cascading maple leaves. They are depicted at differing angles to give the impression that they are either falling or getting swept away by the wind. The gently drifting foliage portrayed by this design conveys that same sense of calmness and serenity that one might feel as the strolled through the woods on a crisp autumn day. The reverse side of the coin bears the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, whose unrelenting poise has also been associated with grace and calmness.
The other major change in the design is the height of the raised images, or the “relief” as they are referred to as. Due to several advances in minting technology, machines are now able to produce an even higher relief on each coin, which results in a clearer degree of detail and greater sense of depth throughout the entire design. The 2014 $50 maple leaf coin is believed to have the highest relief of any coin produced by the Royal Canadian Mint.
