The Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coin has quickly become one of the best-selling silver coins for sale at the Perth Mint. While the primary option in the series is the 1 oz silver bullion coin, the mint also issues high-relief proofs in 1 oz and 5 oz silver, with the latter representing the largest coin available in the series. The Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins were introduced by the Perth Mint in 2014. Designs in this series are created by John Mercanti, the former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint who oversaw countless major coin design initiatives for the US Mint. He worked for the US Mint over the course of four different decades, retiring in 2010 as the 12th Chief Engraver in mint history.
All of the 2014 5 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins in this JM Bullion listing come with a perfect certification and additional designation. The PR70 grade means the coins have full, original mint luster and no detracting flaws of any kind on the design elements or background fields.
The additional DCAM label available in the slab indicates the coins are Deep-cameo specimens. A DCAM coin has strong, frosted design elements that contrast beautifully with the deeply-mirrored, clear background field.
Queen Elizabeth II is depicted in right-profile relief on the obverse of the 2014 5 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins. This is the fifth-generation Australian design for its denominations and was created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley.
An Australian wedge tail eagle is featured on the reverse of 2014 5 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins. This design is the first in the series, which has featured a handful of varying designs over the course of its availability. In this release, the wedge tail eagle flies level across the coin’s design field with its wings flexed and its talons reaching out to clutch its perch.
Produced by the Perth Mint, these 5 oz Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Silver Coins are high-relief specimens. This means the blanks were struck several times under intense pressure to create deeper fields and greater relief for the designs.
