America the Beautiful is a 56-coin series from the United States Mint. Unveiled in 2010 for the first time, the series includes five new releases each year. In total, all 50 US states, five territories, and the federal District of Columbia will feature in the coin program by the time it concludes in 2021.
On the reverse face of the coin is the image of a hiker looking out over the Shenandoah River Valley in the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia. The engravings on this identify the park, state of issue, and year of issue for the coin.
The obverse features the left-profile portrait of President George Washington. Used on the American quarter since 1932, this image was refined at that time by John Flanagan and based upon a 1786 sculpting of Washington done by William Cousins.
