America the Beautiful is a 56-coin series that will eventually produce a reverse image representing each of the 50 US states, the District of Columbia, and the nation’s overseas territories. Each year, there are 5 new coins introduced, and the program is scheduled to run through 2021.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park was established in 1932. It covers an expansive 149,137 acres in Colorado, and contains alpine lakes, aspen forests, grasslands, and countless other landscapes. The Great Sand Dunes themselves are the largest dunes in America and provide visitors with numerous outdoor activities, such as sand sledding, hiking, and more.
On the reverse side of each coin is the image of an adult and child at the edge of a creek. The Great Sand Dunes rise toward the horizon in the distance, while the engravings “Colorado,” “Great Sand Dunes,” and “E Pluribus Unum” surround the image.
The obverse side of the coin is similar to that of the standard American quarter. George Washington’s left-profile bust is surrounded by the engravings of the face value, “In God We Trust,” “United States of America,” and “Liberty.”
The United States Mint produces a limited number of these coins each year. This coin saw the lowest mintage of the America the Beautiful Coins in 2014, making it an extra rare find, especially in a near-perfect grade. Only a limited number of these coins can earn the near-perfect grade these coins have. MS69 coins have their full, original luster and a maximum of two detracting marks. The DM designation on this coin identifies its deeply mirrored, proof-like finish.
