The Mexican Silver Libertad is the official silver bullion coin of Mexico which was first released in 1982. It has since become one of Mexico’s most iconic pieces of currency. This 2014 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad is the most recent edition of the coin from the acclaimed National Mint of Mexico (La Casa de Moneda de México). It is composed from 2 troy oz of 99.9% pure silver and measures 48 mm in diameter. Each Libertad is guaranteed to arrive in brilliant uncirculated condition, encased in either a protective sleeve or its original tube of 20.
The obverse of the coin offers an aerial view of Mexico’s celebrated winged Victoria statue, which sits atop the Mexican Victory Independence Column in Central Mexico City. This famous gold statue depicts the classical figure of Victory or Nike, carrying a laurel wreath in one hand and a set of chains the other. The statue serves as a tribute to the Mexican army’s triumph over Spain, which ultimately won the country its independence. From the billowing fabric of its draped garment to its dynamic pose, great care has been taken to provide an accurate rendition of this celebrated monument. Equally impressive are the details of the landscape, which features two of Mexico’s well-known volcanoes, the Popocatépetl and the Iztaccíhuatl. The obverse also included along the edge of the coin are its weight, purity and mintage year in Spanish.
The reverse side of the coins allows viewers to observe the evolution of Mexico’s Coat of Arms. Prominently featured in the center is the country’s present coat of arms, which consists of a gold eagle devouring a snake as it perches on top of a cactus. The image is very dear to the Mexican people because it was inspired from an Ancient Aztec tale about the settling of Mexico City. Surrounding the current coat of arms in a circular formation are ten of its predecessors and the words, “Estados Unidos Mexicano.”
