The Mexican Silver Libertad coins are considered to be legal tender even though they have no specific denomination. Their value is tied to the market value of 1 Troy ounce of silver and guaranteed by the Banco de Mexico. The Libertad coin series is minted in .999 pure silver, and is comparable to the American Silver Eagle and the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf coins. The 2 oz Silver Libertad Coin was first minted in 1996. In addition to the silver bullion coins, silver proof, reverse proof, and antique finish coins are minted for collectors. JM Bullion has the 2014 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad Coin available for purchase right now.

The oldest mint still operating in North America is La Casa de Moneda de Mexico, the official mint of Mexico. This mint produces the Mexican Libertad coin series in both .999 pure gold and .999 pure silver. The Silver Libertad series was introduced in 1982 in just the 1 ounce weight. Through the years, the mint has expanded their offerings to include fractional weight coins (1/20 ounce, 1/10 ounce, 1/4 ounce and 1/2 ounce), 2 ounce and 5 ounce coins, and finally 1 kg coins. With few exceptions, the Mexican Mint has produced all of the weights every year. Due to the high quality of the silver used to produce them, and the traditionally low mintage of the 2 oz coins, the 2 oz Mexican Silver Libertad has become a highly sought after coin among collectors.
The current national Coat of Arms of Mexico is featured on the obverse of the 2014 Mexican Silver Libertad coin. The Coat of Arms portrays a Mexican golden eagle, perched atop a cactus, with a snake in its beak. Surrounding the eagle above are the words ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS and below are oak and laurel leaves. Wrapped in a circle along the edge of the coin are 10 past versions of the official Coat of Arms of Mexico used throughout history. They also feature an eagle, quite often with a snake in its beak, and often standing on a cactus.
The Winged Victory statue in Mexico City is in the foreground of the reverse of the Silver Libertad coin. Also on the reverse, in the background, are 2 famous Mexican volcanoes – Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl. There is a legendary love story in Aztec mythology between princess Iztaccihuatl and the brave warrior Popocatepetl, whom these 2 volcanoes are said to represent. Mexico’s freedom from Spain is immortalized by the Winged Victory statue.
