When you order a coin from this listing, you will receive your 2014 1 oz Proof Isle of Man Gold Angel Coin in near-perfect Proof 69 condition as assigned by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Coins in this condition will have only minor flaws when viewed under magnification. These coins were also given the Ultra Cameo, or UCAM, designation, meaning they have deeply-mirrored backgrounds and heavily frosted design fields.
On the obverse face of each 2014 1 oz Proof Isle of Man Gold Angel Coin, you will find the image of Queen Elizabeth II as designed by Ian Rank-Broadly. This image of Her Majesty is the fourth-generation image used on commonwealth coinage, and it shows the Queen at 70 years old. The image was used between 1998 and 2014. The engravings on this side of the coin include “ELIZABETH II,” “ISLE OF MAN,” and “2014.”
The reverse side of these coins features a new image of the Archangel St. Michael facing to the left of the coin while slaying a dragon. In the image, St. Michael stabs a spear through the dragon’s neck. Engravings on this face include “FINE GOLD 1 OUNCE” and “ANGEL.”
Manx Angels, which is another name for these coins, are unique because they are considered legal tender, but they don’t have a specific face value. Instead, they are given a value based on their precious metal content, much like the Mexican Libertad or South African Krugerrand.
These Isle of Man coins are minted by Pobjoy Mint, which minted the Angel coins for the Isle of Man from 1984 to 2016. The Pobjoy Mint was founded in 1965 by Derek Pobjoy in the United Kingdom. Pobjoy is credited with producing the world’s first titanium coin in 1999—the Gibraltar Millennium £5 Coin.
