Hawksbill turtles are referred to as the Taku by the people of Fiji, hence the use of Fiji Taku in the name of these coins. The Hawksbill Turtle coin, of similar design from the New Zealand Mint, is issued for the island of Niue.
The hawksbill turtle migrates from Fiji to the northern island of New Zealand on annual basis to take advantage of the calm, shallow waters for feeding and breeding purposes. Once prized as a delicacy in local cuisines, the endangered status of the species has resulted in increased awareness of its plight and protection for the turtles.
Each of the 2014 1 oz New Zealand Silver $2 Fiji Taku Coins in this listing has a near-perfect grade of MS69 from the NGC. Coins in this condition still have their full, original mint luster, but may also feature a maximum of two minor detracting flaws on the surface.
The obverse of each coin features the coat of arms for Fiji. Originally the Fiji Taku was issued from 2010 to 2012 with the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. These 2014 coins mark the second year that the Fijian coat of arms has been used on the obverse instead.
On the reverse you’ll find the hawksbill turtle swimming through the bubbly, warm waters of the South Pacific. The design set for the swimming turtles bears a strong, frosted finish that contrasts with the deeply-mirrored finish on a sliver of coin to the left, which bears the phrase “Fiji Taku.”
