The Hawksbill turtle is a native species in the tropical waters of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. The turtle gets its name from its distinctive, pointed beak and has an overlapping scale pattern on its shell. Speaking of the turtle’s shell, it is one of the brightest colored and patterned of any turtle in the world. Each year, Hawksbill turtles come to the shores of New Zealand from Fiji. When the turtles arrive in New Zealand, they gather primarily near the upper North Island of New Zealand in its clear, shallow waters.
Hawksbill turtles are critically endangered as a result of human activity around the globe. The New Zealand Mint is calling attention to the plight of this turtle with its unique minting and intricate design.
On the reverse side of the coin, investors will find the intricately engraved image of the Hawksbill turtle swimming through the waters of the Pacific. On the obverse side, the side-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II (as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley) is stamped on the coin, along with the country of issue. All Hawksbill Turtle 1 oz. Silver Coins are packaged and shipped in a protective sleeve that protects the coin during shipping, and offers the perfect display piece for the coin.

“2014 Last year of this design. I like the 2013 version better. The side with a turtle looks well but the side with a queen not so much.”
