This past year, the Chinese mint released its latest installment to its panda coin series, the 2014 Chinese Silver Panda Coin. The first coins depicting this beloved creature were released in 1983. Since then, they’ve gained increasing popularity among investors and collectors alike. Each panda coin is made from 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver. They measure 40 mm in diameter and 2.98 mm in width. All the silver panda coins featured in this collection have received an MS69 (Mint State 69) grade from the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation). MS69 coins possess a near perfect mint state without any scuffing or hairline marks to inhibit its original luster. While one or two small contact marks may be visible, they will never appear on any of the primary focal points. To preserve their official MS grade, coins have been individually sealed in their certified NGC slab.
Featured on the front of the coin is the loveable panda in his native habitat. He is depicted playfully holding a branch as he sits on the floor of his bamboo forest home. Great lengths have been taken to capture every detail of this picture from the soft texture of the panda’s fur to the dense growth of bamboo shoots in the background. Equally as impressive are the details on the reverse side, which help present the Forbidden City’s Temple of Heaven in all its architectural glory. Encircling the temple are the words “People’s Republic of China” in Chinese as well as the mintage year.
