This past year, the Royal Mint of Great Britain released this 2014 British Silver Horse Coin as the first of its Shēngxiào Lunar Coin series. This extraordinary collection was inspired by the different zodiac signs of the Chinese Lunar calendar. Because 2014 represents The Year of the Horse, this year’s equine celebrant will be prominently displayed on the front of this commemorative coin.
The horse coins featured here have been minted from 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver. After careful evaluation by the NGC (Numismatic Gauranty Corporation), each coin has been designated with a MS67 (Mint State 67) grade and a Proof-like condition. Coins with an MS67 grade display an exceptional luster with no hairline marks. While as many as four contact marks may be present, no more than two can occur on any of the main focal points. The term “Proof-like” indicates that only one side of the coin displays a highly reflective surface. To prevent any damage, each coin remains sealed in its individual NGC certified slab.
Like the British-born Chinese artist who created this the artwork, this silver horse coin is a union of eastern and western cultures. The front of the coin depicts the noble stallion galloping across an open field. With the long flowing lines of its swishing tail to the smooth curves of the rolling hill, this image demonstrates many of the aesthetics common to Asian art. Equally as impressive is the dynamic angle of the horse, which makes it appear to be charging directly at the viewer. The “Ma” or Chinese symbol for “horse” appears above its tail as a finishing touch. In contrast to the Asian influences of the front, the reverse side offers a distinctly British motif with the uncanny likeness of Queen Elizabeth II. Her effigy reflects the unending pride and spirit of her loyal subjects.
