The Royal Mint of Great Britain first began producing silver Britannia coins in 1997. Now JM Bullion has the honor of presenting the 17th installment of this particular coin, the 2014 Silver Britannia. Each Britannia coin has been minted from 1 troy ounce of 99.9% pure silver, giving it a face value of £2. Individually, coins measure 38.61 mm in diameter and 3 mm in width.
The NGC (Numismatic Gauranty Corporation) has certified these particular coins with an MS69 (Mint State 69) grade. A grade of MS69 indicates that the coin has no contact marks and only one or two minor hairline marks, none of which will be visible on any of the major design elements. In addition to their near perfect mint state, these coins also possess a Deep Proof Like appearance. This term indicates a highly reflective surface quality on both sides of the coin. To maintain the exceptional condition of these coins, each Britannia has been preserved in its own NGC certified plastic slab.
As their name suggests, each coin features Britannia, the feminine embodiment of Great Britain. The front artwork depicts her in a toga and a war helmet as she watches vigilantly from British shores. In her right hand, she holds a trident while the left hand grasps an olive branch and a shield bearing the Union Jack. The design concept honors both the country as well as its fine naval force.
The reverse side of the coin pays tribute to yet another female known to personify Great Britain, Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy portrays the monarch in profile with poised yet serene expression on her face.
