For the seventh time in eight years, the American Silver Eagle coins set a sales record in 2014. The US Mint recorded total sales of 44,006,000 coins. This mark remains the second-highest in program history behind only the 2015 Silver Eagles and represented a modest increase over the previous year. Each of the 2014 1 oz American Silver Eagle coins listed here comes with a near-perfect certification from the PCGS. Coins in Mint State 69 condition exhibit full, original mint luster with no more than two minor detracting flaws present. Examples of acceptable flaws at this grade level include minuscule contact marks or hairlines only.
The growth in demand for the Silver Eagles in 2014 was relatively modest by recent standards in the 2010s. The mintage figure increased by roughly 1.4 million coins to a new record high. Opening day sales in 2014 accounted for 3,180,500 coins in total and the US Mint had to institute periodic suspensions in production and rationing at the point of purchase in order to meet demand.
On the obverse of 2014 1 oz American Silver Eagle Coins is Walking Liberty. This iconic design first featured on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coin from 1916 to 1947. The design is representative of America’s drive toward a brighter future, with Liberty walking toward the setting sun on the horizon. Her left hand is outstretched toward the horizon as she wears the American flag over her shoulders.
The reverse face of 2014 American Silver Eagles bears the oldest American coin design element. The heraldic eagle of the United States featured on the first coins ever issued by the US Mint in 1794. This is a modern depiction of that iconic design and was modified in 1986 by John Mercanti for use on the Silver Eagles.
