The lore of cowboys in North America is most commonly associated with the Wild West in the United States. More than just outlaws, cowboys were ranchers, farmers, and laborers who worked across the United States and in the mountainous regions of Canada, as well. The Royal Canadian Mint is honoring the history of the cowboy in Canada with the 2014 ½ oz Cowboy $10 Canadian Silver coin.
The O Canada series of coins honors the environment and natural wonders of Canada, as well as its cultural history. The cowboy image featured on this coin was designed by artist Bernie Brown. A lone cowboy is seen on horseback atop a hill, looking out over a valley with cattle grazing. In the background, the majestic Rocky Mountains can be seen towering above everything else. The lone cowboy is flanked on either side by a cowboy hat and mint year stamp. Above the image is the word “Canada,” while the face value of the coin (10 dollars) is stamped below.
On the opposite side of the coin, Susanna Blunt’s classic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II that is commonly used on both circulation and commemorative coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint. Blunt’s image of Queen Elizabeth II is flanked by her name (Elizabeth II) and the phrase “D.G. Regina.” In Latin, the phrase reads “Dei Gratia Regina.” Translated into English, this phrase means “By the Grace of God, Queen.”
When gold was discovered in the Yukon Territories at the turn of the 20th century, Great Britain needed facilities capable of processing and refining the gold into bullion and coins. Today, the Royal Canadian Mint is responsible for producing commemorative and circulation currency for the Government of Canada.
