Each of the five animal figures featured on these Five Blessings coins means something different symbolically in Chinese culture. The design features, in order, a bat, deer, crane, and two magpies. These animals represent, in order, blessings of happiness, success, long life, joy, and good fortune.
The reverse face of the coin bears the Five Blessings design. Arranged in a half-moon crescent, the five animals are featured from top to bottom in the center of the coins design. The far-right field on the coin has the Chinese symbol for good fortune, while the coins weight, metal content, and purity bisect the design vertically in the middle.
On the obverse is the traditional right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured on Canadian and other commonwealth coinage since ascending to the throne in 1952, this right-profile portrait is the latest from the Royal Canadian Mint, and was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt.
Founded in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint is actually one of the youngest minting operations in the Western Hemisphere. However, it is also one of the most respected, and creates popular bullion coins such as the Canadian Maple Leaf annually.
