The American Eagle Series debuted in 1986 with a gold and silver coin. Platinum coins were introduced in 1997 and have been issued ever since. Proof coins were made available in 4 weights (1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz) upon their debut. In 2009, the US Mint stopped production of the fractional weights and now just releases these coins in a 1 oz weight.
