Proof American Gold Eagles have a fascinating history at the United States Mint. The Gold Eagle Series was introduced in 1986 and initially offered four BU gold coins and 1 proof gold coin. While fractional-ounce coins were available from the outset in the BU Series, proof coins were not offered in fractional ounces until 1987-1988. Proof Gold Eagles were introduced in 1986 when the broader Gold Eagle Series debuted, but the coin was only available in 1 oz gold. Fractional-ounce coins were introduced over the next two years in the Proof Gold Eagle Series. The 1/2 oz gold coin was introduced first in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988.
The obverse of 2013-W Proof American Gold Eagles comes with Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. Designed in 1907, it features the full-length figure of Liberty in front-facing relief as she walks toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. The background design elements include sun rays, a ring of stars, and the U.S. Capitol Building.
On the reverse of 2013-W 1/4 oz Gold Eagle Coins, you will find a family of bald eagles. This design from Miley Busiek was created specifically for the Gold Eagle bullion series. It depicts a male eagle flying over the family nest as a female guards the hatchlings.
