Proof coins were originally struck by mints as a method of checking the features of the die cast, analyzing the accuracy of coin presses, and maintaining small samples for archival purposes. Today, proof coins are minted in greater numbers than many bullion programs because numismatists covet the sharper rims, enhanced design features, and smoother background fields of the finished product.
American Gold Eagle coins are produced by the United States Mint on an annual basis in three versions: bullion, proof, and burnished. The bullion and proof versions of the coin are struck in four different weights: 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, and 1/10 oz. The burnished coin was introduced in 2006 in all four weights, but is currently struck only in 1 oz.
The obverse side of each Proof American Gold Eagle features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic Lady Liberty image. Saint-Gaudens’ image was created in 1905 at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt, who hoped to revive the standard of design on American gold coins.
On the reverse of each coin, you’ll find Miley Busiek’s design of the bald eagle. Her depiction, used only on the American Gold Eagle, features a male bald eagle in flight over its nest, where a female guards a group of hatchlings.
The United States Mint produces all four weights of Proof American Gold Eagle coins at the West Point Mint, with other facilities contributing to the bullion and burnished coins.
