The state of South Dakota is one of just three states in the America the Beautiful Series, along with Arizona and California, to highlight the same national park or monument as used in the circulation State Quarters program launched by the US Mint in the 1990s. Though Mount Rushmore also featured on the State Quarters design for South Dakota, the design for the silver coins in the ATB Series is a different one.
Mount Rushmore National Memorial features the faces of four US Presidents carved into the granite rock face of Mount Rushmore. The mountain itself is a batholith in the Black Hills near Keystone, South Dakota. Gutzon Borglum is the sculptor credited with the design of the memorial and oversaw the work carving the president’s faces, which took nearly 14 years stretching from 1927 to 1941.
On the reverse of 2013-P 5 oz Burnished ATB Mount Rushmore Silver Coins is the image of workers carving the faces of two presidents into the rock. You can note in the background a profile view of George Washington, the nation’s first president, and Thomas Jefferson in the foreground, the nation’s third president.
The obverse of the 2013 5 oz Burnished ATB Mount Rushmore Coin includes the effigy of President George Washington. This design has featured on the circulation quarter since 1932 and was designed by John Flanagan. The president’s face was put on the quarter in 1932 to mark his 200th birthday.
