The United States Mint introduced the Proof American Gold Eagle over the course of three years. The first coin was offered in 1986 with the debut of the program in the form of a 1 oz gold specimen. In 1987, the US Mint issued the 1/2 oz gold coin. In 1988, the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins debuted. This was in contrast to its debut of the BU Gold Eagles, with all four weights available the first year of offering in 1986.
The obverse of the 2013-W Proof Gold Eagles in this set includes Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic image of Liberty. This full-length, front-facing relief shows Liberty walking toward the viewer with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. She is surrounded by a ring of stars with sun rays in the background.
On the reverse side of 2013-W Proof American Gold Eagles, you will find a family of bald eagles. This design was created in 1986 by Miley Busiek for exclusive use on the coins in this collection. The image shows a female eagle in the nest with hatchlings as a male eagle soars overhead.
