The Australian Silver Kookaburra coin program is the longest-running silver issue from the Perth Mint and provided the foundation for countless other bullion coin programs to come from the Western Australia-based mint. The Silver Koala, Silver Kangaroo, Silver Wedge Tail Eagle, and Silver Emu all owe their existence to the trend started by the Silver Kookaburra. The Proof Silver Kookaburra has been produced in most years by the Perth Mint since the 1990 introduction of the broader collection. However, the type of Proof Silver Kookaburra the mint issues has varied in some years. While a 1 oz proof silver coin is standard, in some years the Perth Mint has offered only a gilded version or, in this case, a high-relief proof coin.
All 2013 1 oz Proof Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins in this listing are available to purchase with a protective presentation case. The coins are housed individually and come from a maximum mintage issue of 10,000 coins in all. The Perth Mint set a mintage limit for this presentation at 9,000, allowing for 1,000 additional coins to be sold in other sets. However, the final declared mintage for the 2013 coin was 7,548 coins.
High-relief coins have beautiful concave surfaces on each side of coin. The use of concave blanks allows for the high-pressure proof strike to create more impressive 3D visuals for the design elements during coining.
On the reverse of 2013 1 oz Proof Australian Silver Kookaburra Coins is the image of two young kookaburras on the branch of a tree. The background field is filled with bush flowers and there are inscriptions of “Australian Kookaburra,” “2013,” and the “P” mint mark of the Perth Mint on this face.
The obverse of 2013 Proof Australian Silver Kookaburra High Relief Coins includes the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is featured here in the fifth portrait to feature on Australian coins. It was created for the Royal Mint of England in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley and debuted on Australian coins in 1999.
