The official gold coin of the United States is the American Gold Eagle. It features imagery of the nation’s most iconic symbols, including Lady Liberty on the obverse side of the coin with the American bald eagle on the reverse. Coin Highlights:
When the American Gold Eagle coin debuted in 1986, the bullion version of the coin featured the 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz coins. The proof coin debuted the same year, but was only available in the 1 oz weight. Fractional-weight proof coins were introduced by the US Mint over the next two years. The 1/2 oz coin debuted in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coin in 1988.
More importantly, when the American Gold Eagle coin debuted from the US Mint, it was the first gold coin struck by the US Mint since 1933 and the first coin in the US to feature a gold content greater than .900 since 1837. With a face value of $50 (USD), it was also the highest face value on a US coin at the time.
